Ann Littlewood – History of Storthes Hall.

Ann told us the history of the site beginning with the pre-reformation monks of North Yorkshire. In 1788 the Horsfall family had a mansion built on the site. In 1898 the land was purchased by West Riding County Council and it became the site of the Fourth West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum.

Ann explained changes that the hospital experienced over time and how patient numbers grew. After WWII, over 3,000 patients were resident there.

Ann told us that the hospital was closed in 1991. It was purchased by Huddersfield University and became the site of their student accommodation.

This talk stirred memories for many members of the audience who had had relatives in the hospital. Ann was able to answer questions and speak to people afterwards.
