Did you know that there are roughly 250 species of bumble bee?
Did you know that ‘bumble’ means to hum?
Michael introduced us to these facts and a wealth of information about the intricate lives of bees.
The audience was fascinated by Michael’s interesting presentation about the lives of bees. He described in detail how colonies of bees organise their hives, how each bee performs its role in maintaining the hive and creating the honey.
He told us about the Himalayan giant honey bee who produce huge nests of honey hanging from high Himalayan rock faces. People risk their lives climbing rope ladders with long knives to cut the nests down and collect the honey.
He told us that the first bees to arrive in New Zealand were taken there in 1839 by Mary Bumby, the sister of a methodist minister.
Thank you Michael for your interesting talk.
