There are some art works that have a hold over the public imagination. Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper is one of those.
Sammi explained to us that the fame of this fresco started as soon as Leonardo completed it; he had used an experimental technique which caused the work to begin disintegrating soon after completion.
Since then, other artists have been keen to produce representations of the original, often putting their own interpretation on aspects of the original.
Sammi talked us through some of ways that the Last Supper has been copied and reinterpreted. Starting with a cast iron version, she took us on a visit to churches throughout the British Isles where the Last Supper has been carved in stone, alabaster and wood.
Thank you Sammi for your fascinating talk.
