Henry Francis Lyte.

Saturday 30th September

What do you know about the writer of the well-loved hymn Abide with Me?  John Lyte shared the fascinating story of his antecedent with us on Saturday.

John is a return visitor to Friends of the Rydings.  We enjoyed his talk on the history of the Post Office at our meeting in April this year. This time he presented part 1 of his biographical history of his relative Henry Francis Lyte.

An unusual surname and an unusual life from his birth in Scotland, his schooling in Ireland, his desertion by his father and separation from his mother.  Things did not look good for young Henry.  His Head Master recognised young Henry’s  potential. He provided him with the excellent education that helped Henry to turn his fortunes around.

Thank you once again John, for your entertaining talk.  We look forward to welcoming you back for part 2!
