Ian Philp – A History of Hove Edge and Walter Clough Valley.

25th October 2025

Ian Philp presented his local history talk in front of a large audience of members and friends.

Ian told us that Hove Edge takes it name from ivy edge – suggesting that its location against the steep valley sides was covered in ivy.

He traced the history of the Hove Edge from the parcels of land owned by four notable, local families to the development of stone quarries and mines. The pictures he showed us, made it clear just how much stone was removed from the quarries to make high-quality flag stones and stone for building.

Ian gave drew our attention to some of the historic houses in the area – some dating back to the 16th century. Many of these buildings are still standing and are lived in to this day.

We had a virtual trip down Walter Clough valley to see the area’s industrial past – brick making as well as stone quarrying. Pop and ice-cream factories and, of course, the famous Sunny Bunce’s.

Many thanks Ian for your interesting, well-researched talk that brought our local history to life.
