William Smith – his legacy.

27th January

Chris Helme attracted a large crowd to our speaker event on 27th January.

He gave us a tremendous presentation on William Henry Smith and his legacy.

Chris told us about the life of William Henry Smith, how he made his fortune and what gave him his idea to build an orphanage for the town. He went on to present the history of the art gallery and Smith’s donation of the gallery to the people of Brighouse.

His account of the visit of Princess Louisa to open the library in 1907 was especially interesting, including details of Smith’s outrage at the disappointment of the crowds. Brighouse citizens had turned out in huge numbers to welcome Princess Louisa and were not able to see her because she rode in a covered carriage!

Chris included fascinating details and brought up characters from Brighouse history that stirred our memories.  Many people stayed behind to talk to him and provide him with more information for stories for his magazine.

You can find out more on his website – including how to purchase his books and magazines.

Thank you Chris!
